Tiny white flying insect. #879695

Asked August 01, 2024, 9:38 AM EDT

This tiny white flying insect has been present after the mayfly hatch in June on Lake Huron in northeast Michigan. Apparently they hatch on warm nights too. Can you identify it?

Alcona County Michigan

Expert Response

This is the subimago life stage of a mayfly. They emerge out of the water in a final immature life stage before becoming adults.

This one is probably a straggler that emerged a bit later.

Thank you Mr. Löwenstein.  There isn’t just one, there are thousands on our window and they don’t change.  They apparently die at this stage.
