Young Blueberry Bushes #879694

Asked August 01, 2024, 9:35 AM EDT

I had my soil tested and was told it was not good for blueberries, so I purchased Coast of Maine Soil for Acid-Loving Plants and 30-gallon grow bags and planted one bush per bag. They were purchased from a nursery in May and have produced a few berries, but they both have rusty-looking leaves. One of the plants has roots just above the soil level. Should I try to pull it up and break up the roots? What else can I do to keep them healthy?

Hi Yolanda!

Your blueberry looks totally fine! If you didn’t break up the root ball before you planted it, I’d dig it up and break it up but either way, I’d recommend to replant it a little deeper. Often time soil settles as it gets watered which might have exposed the roots but it’s an easy fix. If the red leaf if worrying you, I’d recommend feeding it with blueberry/hydrangea fertilizer next spring once you  start seeing leaves.
