apple tree damage #879660

Asked July 31, 2024, 8:14 PM EDT

Our 30+ year old Mackintosh apple tree had a branch broken off by tonight's storm. It wasn't a clean break and it will be hard to get a clean cut. Should I treat the jagged edge? Paint or something better? Thanks Jim

Thank you for reaching out to ask2.extension.

It is not recommended to use paint or anything like that.  It is better to let the tree heal itself.  Trees have the ability to build cells that will protect the damaged area.  Smooth the break as much as possible.

I would keep an eye on it over the next couple of years.
