Plant under bat house #879633

Asked July 31, 2024, 3:55 PM EDT

I’m installing a bat house on the side of my house in Lakewood. The bat conservation website warns that the ground under the bat house will get over-fertilized from all the guano. The site has southern exposure, lots of sun, dry but I could irrigate if needed. Is there a plant that might like these conditions?

thank you!

Expert Response

Guano is high in nitrogen, while it makes a great fertilizer, it is likely to be too concentrated over time for most plants to be planted directly below the bat house. A non-reflective plant saucer can be placed under the bat house to collect the guano and be used as fertilizer or disposed of.

That’s a good idea, I’ll give the saucer a try. Thanks!
