Gnat-like insects in vegetable garden #879428

Asked July 30, 2024, 1:27 PM EDT

There are these gnat-like insects in our vegetable garden. They are all over the corn, cukes, pretty much everything. The corn is dying & we fear everything else will die too! What are they & what can be done about it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. -Thank you!

Expert Response

This is a large amount of aphids on your leaves. The recent tropical air mass has brought a few species of aphids up from more southerly areas to Michigan.

If you do nothing, the plant will survive though the leaves may yellow, curl, or enter decline. You can wipe the aphids off with a wet rag or apply neem oil or insecticidal soap (if temperatures are below 90F). Always read the label to confirm any insecticides are allowed in vegetables and applied according to the label.
