How and when to prune Boysen Berries #879400
Asked July 30, 2024, 11:40 AM EDT
I live in Newberg, OR and need some help pruning my Boysen berries. Plants are approximately 6 years old and have produced lots of fruit over the years. Issue is the new canes are about 10-12 feet long. How far back can I prune them without impacting the amount of fruit they will produce next year? Can I also remove the canes now that fruited this year?
Thanks in advance for you help!

Hi Trracie,
Boysenberries are indeed vigorous growers. Yes, you may prune out the fruiting canes once harvest is finished. At that point you could then trellis this years canes which are sprawling everywhere. Yes, you may top them, but it will reduce the amount of fruit produced next year, which might or might not be a problem.
I have the prefect publication from OSU Extension, "Growing Blackberries in Your Home Garden". It answers all of your questions and provides even more detailed information. It's a excellent resource to have on hand.
