Expert Response
A lot of vegetables can grow in limestone or more alkaline soils. It might be a good idea to get your soil ph tested to see what the ph level is. Knowing that, you can get a better idea of the types of vegetables that will grow there. I see you live in Klamath county. The OSU extension office does soil ph testing. If you can bring in a sample of your soil, we can verify the ph. This is a free test. The OSU office is at 6923 Washburn Way, Klamath Falls, OR 97603. The office hours are 9 to 5 weekdays, closing for lunch between 12 and 1. To get a good soil sample:
Vegetables for Alkaline Soils
Of course depending on what your actual ph is, and how much effort you want to put into your garden, you can alter the soil to bring it back to normal
If it is too alkaline, one common method is by applying sulfur. But there are also different kinds of sulfur. To know how much to add, and of what kinds of sulfur, you need to test the pH of your soil. Adding too much can cause imbalances. A basic rule to follow is to start by adding a little and retesting year to year.
How do I collect a soil sample for testing?
To get the most accurate results:
- Collect your soil sample from the area of the soil where the plant roots will grow. About 6 to 8 inches deep is good for most garden plants. Get a bit of soil from several different spots in the garden area. Bring in at least a cup of soil
- Remove any roots, grass or mulch from the sample for the most accurate test result.
