lawn treatments #879387

Asked July 30, 2024, 10:40 AM EDT

We will be part of a HOA that uses lawn chemicals. I am trying to find out how safe these chemicals are. I tried your phone. The message says the number is no longer in service. Could someone please call me? janny<personal data hidden>. granular fertilizer with Dimension t zone selective herbicide for broadleaf granular 25-0-6 fertilizer.

Expert Response

Thanks for your question.

We are strictly an on-line forum consisting of Master Gardeners from throughout Minnesota. We do not return calls and only operate on an electronic basis. I think what you want to know is information about certain lawn chemicals. I am having difficulty from your question in knowing what specific chemicals in which you are interested. There are several different fertilizers made by Dimension. Even with the information you provided, there are many possibilities. All safety information must appear on the product label of the fertilizer. If the application instructions on the product bag are carefully followed, there should be no safety concerns.

Thanks for consulting us.

I am reading Dimension is toxic to fish and don’t use on turf adjacent to any body of water (our lot is adjacent to a man made pond with an eagles’s nest on a tree in it).  .  Also that it is banned in parts of NY  and that it is listed as a “chemical of high concern” in Minnesota.   All the HOA would tell me is that it is granular fertilizer with Dimension, and then the T Zone selective herbicide, and then granular 25-0-6.   Should I find out what type of Dimension they are using (if they will tell me)?  thanks. janny

Thanks for getting back to us with clarification on your question.

As I said in my previous response, Dimension is somewhat of a trade name that covers a variety of products. I believe in your particular situation, it might be a pre-emergent herbicide with the active ingredient dithiopyr. This chemical is commonly used to control grasses and broadleaf weeds. Here is some information about it:

https://heritageppg.com/products/dimension-specialty-herbicide?srsltid=AfmBOoodnlijW5cM9gJ2B0hhLeKEN677As464f_R4WshzWQy1QIUVdkI

The TZone herbicide that you mentioned contains triclopyr as an active ingredient. It is specifically directed towards various broadleaf weeds. Here is some information about it:

https://www.pbigordonturf.com/products/herbicides/selective-herbicides/tzone-se-nutsedge-black-medic/

Lastly the 25-0-6 granular fertilizer is one containing 25% by weight nitrogen, 0% by weight phosphate, and 6% by weight potassium. This is a standard type of lawn fertilizer.

Any herbicide, including the two used on the yards on your property, must be applied according to the directions specified for that herbicide. If bodies of water are nearby, there may be special application instructions provided. You will have to determine yourself whether appropriate application was done. I have no way of determining this. In short, just because some type of chemical may be potentially dangerous, how it was applied is the most important.

Good luck and thanks for consulting our forum.

Thanks.  Andrew, at the HOA, said the lawn company (he won’t give me the name of it) uses a pre emergent liquiid with Dimension that is 2EW.  I’m not sure how to make sense of that.  If the liquid runs down the grass into the man made pond on the edge of our property  (where there are fish and frogs and the eagle eats off that) I can’t  imagine  that would be healthy for the environment, flora, fauna , humans etc but I don’t really know enough.  I brought this up to one of the builders yesterday who seemed clueless about what was going on, how to find out more information and how decisions are made regarding this.  According to Andrew, home owners are asking to have their laws treated with fertilizer, herbicides etc but no one else besides us has raised any concerns about safety and health.  So we will do our best to try to find out information and hopefully create a healthy environment.  thank you so much for your support and information. janny and Ted

Thanks your last response.

Dimension 2EW is exactly the herbicide for which I earlier sent you information. The active ingredient is dithiopyr. Here is the information contained on its product label:

“This product is toxic to fish and highly toxic to other aquatic organisms including oysters and shrimp. Use with care when applying to turf areas adjacent to any body of water. Drift and runoff from treated turf may be hazardous to aquatic organisms in water adjacent to treated areas. Do not apply directly to water, or to waters where surface water is present, or to intertidal areas below the man high water mark. Do not apply when weather conditions favor drift from treated areas. Do not contaminate water when disposing of equipment washwater or rinsate”

See:

https://newsomseed.com/resources/Label Dimension 2EW.pdf

Here is what the EPA states regarding this herbicide:

https://www3.epa.gov/pesticides/chem_search/ppls/<personal data hidden>8-20130930.pdf

Again realize the majority of herbicides contain components that potentially have harmful effects.. As I mentioned in my earlier response, when application procedures are followed according to the product label, these environmental impacts should be minimized.

Thanks for your concern. Please get back to us with any further questions.
