Wasp nest? #879345

Asked July 29, 2024, 9:47 PM EDT

I just found this nest in my front yard in a Sunset Maple tree about 7’ from the ground (not very high…). Should this be removed? Does it pose a danger when mowing near it? I just mowed under it today and I’m sure multiple times before I noticed it, no issue fortunately.

Expert Response

This is a bald-faced hornet nest. These are among the most aggressive wasps when their nest is approached. Once we have a freeze, all of the workers will die and the queen will spend the winter underground and build a new nest next season. That height should be high enough for you to be ok as long as the mower isn't hitting the tree.

If you can leave it alone until the fall, that would be best.
