What is happening to my boxwoods? #879326

Asked July 29, 2024, 7:04 PM EDT

My boxwoods are losing green color and leaves are turning brown and falling. There are fine webs so I’m assuming spider mites but also hearing the boxwood moths are a problem

Expert Response

Good Morning,
Box tree moth (Cydalima perspectalis) is a new invasive pest in Michigan that can defoliate and kill boxwood shrubs. Please see attached for reporting.

Insecticides that will kill box tree moth include BT kurstaki (needs to be reapplied every 2 weeks) and pyrethroids (see this list for active ingredients) with a treatment now and one in mid-July when 2nd generation . The link for pyrethroids includes products that are only available to certified pesticide applicators, but you'll find pesticides in the garden center that have those active ingredients. Be sure to read the label before purchasing and applying.
