Best treatment for Colorado Blue Spruce #879323

Asked July 29, 2024, 6:45 PM EDT

We have several 30 year old Colorado Blue Spruce trees that have dead interior branches. What is the best fertilizer or nutrition treatment to prolong the life of these trees, and when is the best time to treat them. I have attached pictures of two trees.

Dakota County Minnesota

Expert Response

Hi Sue,

I'm afraid Colorado blue spruce is not a long-lived tree in Minnesota, and they are prone to many diseases that can kill them.

This is the most common issue with blue spruce:

If you think it's not needle cast, this page may help you pinpoint the issue:

If you are determined to try to save the trees, call a certified arborist who can visit your yard and advise you. You can find one here:

Good luck.
