Native (?) plant identification #879281

Asked July 29, 2024, 3:20 PM EDT

I have an area that I've been trying to grow some native plants. Unfortunately I can't remember everything I planted but know it included goldenrod, swamp milkweed and echinacea, among others. I think I have a couple new plants but I can't get my app to ID it. I don't know if these are flowers, but it almost looks like aster yellow! One of them has additional shoots coming out around the "blossom." Thanks for your help!

Good Morning,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

Please click on the following link from the Minnesota Wildflowers.org website: https://www.minnesotawildflowers.info/flower/giant-goldenrod

Your plants are the giant goldenrod. They are wonderful fall pollinator plants. I do not believe it is aster yellows.

In the fall, you could gather the dry seeds and share them or find a new place to plant them. I have an app called "Picture This" that is free. It also has a paid subscription. You can use that app or inaturalist to identify your native plants. The Minnesota Wildflowers.org website is also excellent to discuss your native plants.

Thank you for growing for our native pollinators! They need lots of good forage. The goldenrod plants are an important food source for them in the fall.

Good Luck!

I had not seen goldenrod with the green "rosettes" before. I'm going attach a photo of my tallest. I've never had one get that big!
Thanks for your input!
