Oak leaf disease #879219

Asked July 29, 2024, 11:31 AM EDT

Two oak trees transplanted from Illinois are showing white round growths and many holes on their leaves. What is this condition and how should I treat it?

Hello Kennette,

Thanks for reaching out to UVM Extension Master Gardener Helpline.

I reached out to our Plant Diagnostics Clinic Director, Ann Hazelrigg, here at UVM and she thought the holes in the leaves were probably some sort of beetle and the raised bumps some sort of gall insect. Neither condition requires any sort of control. The tree should be able to withstand the damage with no ill effects.

I've listed a few resources below on insect and mite galls that you might find interesting.
