Backyard pond question #879200

Asked July 29, 2024, 10:15 AM EDT

Our 800 gallon pond currently houses 19 koi, many water plants, and surrounding rocks which are home to many chipmunks. The pond has a high volume of algae after several treatments of Algae Off, removal of 40% of the plant coverage and daily cleaning of the filter. Since some of the koi are over 20 inches, it is clear we have too many fish for the volume of water, especially with the extreme heat this summer. Where to and how should we transport at least half of our koi population to improve the health of the remaining fish and pond? Your advice on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Expert Response

Domestic koi are not my specialty, and I don't know that Herbert, our new aquaculture specialist, is active on the Ask Extension forum.

Consider writing to Herbert directly: <personal data hidden>.  Depending on what he can offer, I might suggest you also seek advice from the Ohio Online Koi Club (they operate a Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/<personal data hidden>55606/.  I also don't ordinarily do such things, but you may want to seek potential advice or contacts via this commercial entity: https://www.ohiokoi.com/.

I do hope something here bears fruit.
