MSU Extension recommends 2-4D for horsetail control. I have the weed growing in the creek flats in front of my house in Sanilac County Michigan. I use a handheld sprayer for weed control. How many ounces of 2-4D should I use per gallon of water? . Also, how often should I spray?
Thanks,
Bob

Given the proximity to a waterway, 2,4-D may not be a safe herbicide to use, depending on the product. If the pesticide is at risk of entering a waterway, it needs to be a product from the list approved by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).
Aquatic Pesticides and Related Products Approved for Use in Waters of the State of Michigan
There are some products containing 2,4-D listed there. Other formulations not listed are not permitted due to the risk to aquatic life.
Depending on the exact waterway situation, permits are also sometimes required by EGLE.
I would recommend reaching out to them directly to answer some of these questions before making any applications. They should also be able to help with the rate needed for your application. The contact information for the EGLE Environmental Assistance Center is as follows:
