Soft mushy apples #879164

Asked July 28, 2024, 9:47 PM EDT

Our golden delicious apple tree appears to be in good health. The apples on the tree look fine on the outside. When cut open the flesh is still white but extremely soft and mushy. I have been testing them every few days for.2 weeks and they are all the same. What is wrong?

Hi Liz,

Golden Delicious is a softer apple but usually isn't harvested here until October. Why are you picking them now? Does the tree look sick, or does the fruit look spotty or rotting?

The tree and outside of the apples appear healthy. A few fell off the tree so I cut one open out of curiosity.  They are definitely not normal Golden Delicious texture.  It was definitely mushy although the feel from the outside was firm. Perhaps the ones left on the tree will firm as they continue to ripen? In the past we have picked them in late September.

Hi Liz,

If the tree and apples look healthy the only thing to do is wait and see what they’re like at harvest.

Sorry I don’t have an answer. Good luck.
