Chain wrapped around oak tree #879138

I recently bought a cabin with several oak trees wrapped with chains (used to hang hammocks). The trees are growing around the chains, I am worried these may hurt the trees. Should I try to remove the chains or just leave them be?

Hi Tom,
Oh that looks very bad. It would be best if you could remove them but I'm not sure that's possible. I think if you work at it slowly you could manage to pull out a lot of it. They will girdle your trees and eventually kill them. If you can cut them so they aren't restricting the growth of the trees that would help.
Try to remove as much as possible with the least amount of damage to the bark.
