Frozen tree buds #879129

Asked July 28, 2024, 3:49 PM EDT

This spring my Pacific Maple tree had buds but a hard freeze killed them and my tree did not leaf out. Is my tree dead?

Expert Response

Hi Teri,

I'm sorry to hear about your tree.  If it has not leafed out yet, at the end of July, it is very likely dead, yes.  Even though you might still find green beneath the bark or other signs of latent life, a tree that has experienced this level of stress and then been unable to feed itself through the summer is unlikely to recover and should be replaced.

Cordially,

John
