Hi Deb,
Vines replicate the shape of what they are climbing on and their growth comes quickly. up to several feet per year. Pruning can be established however you don't want to employ to early as some vines do flower and fruit different times of the year.
Crossvine is a semi-evergreen and it climbs by using tendrils needing a narrow structure to grab hold on. It generally blooms once a year for up to two weeks. Hummingbirds are attracted to it, with its abundantly rich foliage colors. Crossvine can climb up to 30 ft
Honeysuckle will bloom later longer than Crossvine Birds are attracted to its berry like fruit, especially if well pollinated. You will find reddish-orange flowers Mature sizes of Crossvine average around 10-15 ft.
Virginia Creeper is grown a lot for its foliage color in the Fall. It also produces fall berries and blue fruits You can find variegated cream covered leaves. Grows fast and spreads quickly.
Depending on the choices you select for your pergola, I suggest a soil test to determine your soil meets the requirements for planting. The link is attached.
