News stories earlier this year were referring to a mass periodical cicada emergence in parts of the central U.S.; they were not expected locally (a detail not all news outlets made clear, or researched fully, for either sensationalism or insufficient knowledge of the event). Only a portion of St. Mary's County had a population of periodical cicadas emerging this year, and they finished emerging a couple months ago and the adults completed their life cycle and died out.
