Five year-old black spruce browning in the center. I don’t know if it needs trimming needs more water or less

Hennepin County Minnesota

Expert Response

It will need at least an inch of water per week, more when temps are in the nineties. Check the amount of soil moisture at a depth of 3 inches before watering and keep the soil moist but never mucky. Spruce don’t tolerate soggy soil. Of course there is nothing to be done about inches of rain. Spruce  also suffer in very hot and humid weather. Hopefully the browning is some weather stress and 3 rd year needle drop.
