Is this a sycamore tree #879006

Asked July 27, 2024, 12:03 PM EDT

This is growing right next to our driveway. The leaves are very large and look just like sycamore tree leaves. Is it a sycamore seedling? If so, can we transplant it? Thank you!

Expert Response

You are correct in identifying the young tree as a Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis). I found some reliable websites with information on this plant and listed them below.

I also found a website on how to transplant a Sycamore which is below.

We have had 2 large Sycamore trees in our front yard for 44 years and never had a seedling. The seed balls are all over the yard in the fall but have never sprouted. Do you have mature Sycamore in the area? I wish you success in transplanting the seedling and receiving enjoyment from it for years to come.
