Trimming Oak Trees #879002

Asked July 27, 2024, 11:12 AM EDT

We have several large Burr Oak trees that need large branches removed. We were told by one tree service that oaks should only be trimmed in the fall to avoid infestation from a serious pest. Should we wait until October to trim the oaks or can we have them trimmed now?

Expert Response

Hi Carol, thanks for the question.

Oak wilt is a devastating disease spread by sap beetles and root grafting has wiped out many oak trees. Burr oaks are susceptible to this disease.   Although the high-risk season is from April 15 thru July 15, it is much better to wait until fall or winter. Check out the following link:

I hope this helps.
