Johnson Grass Hay and Prussic Acid #878991

Asked July 27, 2024, 9:58 AM EDT

Hello, I am trying to find out if prussic acid in stressed Johnson grass will eventually gas off after the grass has been mowed and bailed? Can Johnson grass that is mowed and bailed during a summer drought be stored and safely fed to cows during the winter? If so, how long do the bales need to be stored before the risk of cyanide poisoning is gone?

Expert Response

Good Morning, during a drought, johnsongrass can buildup prussic acid especially in the lower part of the stalk. However, if cut, dried, and baled, the prussic acid will dissipate out of the hay. Just give that hay at least 90 days to cure before you feed it. I hope this helps.
