Morning Glory #878985

Asked July 27, 2024, 9:39 AM EDT

Hello, I have morning glory and moonflowers on an arbor. Something was eathing the leaves..lacey AND large holes. . The other morning a flower head was holey. There were 5 buds on the one vine..next morning, no flowers..no buds. Next 2 days..no flowers no buds. I have found 1 Shiney aphid-y beetley looking thing. And tiny bird like or frog like poos. I do have hummingbirds. Also, the arbor is made from sticks from broken down tree.... the thing is also gnawing on that leaving holes a d a powder residue. I see no bugs during daylight hours. But, will bugs eat all the buds? A full little morning glory bud... 5 of them? And now no buds. I'm sad. Please help.

Thank you for reaching out to ask2.extension.

My guess is you have different insects eating your leaves.  They are very prolific this year.

You could get an insect spray or powder such as Neem oil or insecticidal soap and thoroughly spray the plants.  This should take care of the insects.  Please be aware of pollinators when spraying and follow label instructions.  It may take more than one spraying.

As far as what is chewing on your wood, I’m not sure.  That doesn’t look like an insect, possibly a rabbit or squirrel.  Either one of those animals could also be responsible for the eaten buds and flowers, especially if they are totally gone.

I hope this helps some.
