Staining inside maple tree branch #878971

Asked July 26, 2024, 9:56 PM EDT

Took off a (red?) maple branch that was damaged and found mysterious staining outside of damaged area shown in first picture. Second picture shows much less staining where branch was cut from trunk. Would like to know what causes this.

Expert Response

Thank you for your interesting question. The staining you see
is called Spalting caused by a fungus that attacks dead wood. It
is prevalent on distressed Maples but can occur on other tree
species. This may or may not be detrimental to the remainder
of the tree.

I have listed below several links that will explain this in more
detail. Your County OSU Extension Service is also listed should
you desire to reach out to them for their opinion on this.
