Plant for along alley next to fence #878942

Asked July 26, 2024, 4:27 PM EDT

Hi I have a fence with about 2 feet between the fence and the alley. It had grass at first but now it’s all terrible weeds. What can I plant there that is low maintenance, looks good and prevents weeds from growing. I would prefer perennials so that I don’t have to think about this every year.

What to plant in the small space is dependent on the amount of sun the area gets. Full sun is over 6 hours/day. Part-sun 4 - 6 hours/day and less than that is shade. If you have full sun daylilies will fill in and not require much care. If the area is part-sun or shade, hostas will do well.

Thanks! It’s full sun. I would like to plant lavender if that would work. Or a ground cover. I’m not really a fan of day lilies or hostas.

There are very few perennial lavenders for our climate. Here is an article exploring lavender growing in the midwest.

With full sun you many options. Ornamental grasses fill in nicely, have nice movement and many require little maintenance.
