Large Pond water testing #878891

Asked July 26, 2024, 12:12 PM EDT

Does MSU have any pond testing services or kits? I have a half acre pond with an ongoing algae problem. I would like to better understand the current phosphate and nitrogen levels before chemically treating it.

Hi!

No, MSU does not have pond testing services or kits. You can check in with your local health department to get a list of companies near you that can test for phosphorus and nitrogen in surface waters.

If you want to do the testing yourself and you don't mind a loss in accuracy, you can use a number of kits out there. These types of kits are meant for a quick assessment. Here's one for example: https://lamotte.com/products/environmental-science-education/water-monitoring-kits/water-monitoring/water-quality-educator-and-monitoring-outfit-5870-01
