I am trying to create a row of privacy trees in my backyard along the fence. I currently have italian cypress that are not making it. We are at their bottom zone tolerance and i think this last winter was their last straw and they are all going brown from the bottom up this spring/summer. They were doing okay for the last 4 years, not thriving but ok with only some brown until this last year and now it is a slow death.
I am now wondering if Taylor Juniper Trees would work in the area instead. The area is in a full sun area but the sun is more partial until the trees are over the fence.
The house behind us is a little higher which is why I am going for trees that are tall but also narrow and would prefer evergreen but am open to suggestions.
thanks!

Thank you for your question, Lisa. OSU has this information about the species, generally: https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/juniperus-virginiana
Here is an Extension article about the Taylor variety:
https://hles.unl.edu/taylor-juniper-0
This WSU resource lists native shrubs of differing heights and widths that you might consider: https://pnwplants.wsu.edu/ShrubsEvergreen.aspx
Note that, whether native or not, woody plants in most species are experiencing stress due to climate change, and we can't predict which will be able to avoid the same issues your cypress are experiencing. Providing adequate water, together with well-draining soil may help them stay healthy and attractive. Good luck!
