natural grassy area maintenance #878831

Asked July 26, 2024, 5:41 AM EDT

Our neighborhood includes a natural grassy field ( Approximately 5 acres). In order to properly maintain this area is it necessary to mow it yearly?

Lenawee County Michigan

Expert Response

Not mowing could allow invasive trees, shrubs and perennials like Buckthorn, Russian Olive, Canadian Thistle, Callery Pear, etc. to gain/expand their presence in the field.  What are the expectations of your local government and adjoining neighbors regarding mowing frequency?
You have a perfect opportunity to establish a native pollinator habitat and you would only need to mow it once a year in the spring.  Consider planting a native pollinator mix (flowers & grasses) there as I did in part of my backyard. More info here:

Suggested books to read: "Bringing Nature Home" and "Nature's Best Hope" by Doug Tallamy. There are also many books on Michigan native plants and establishing pollinator meadows available too.  More info on establishing a native wildflower field:

You should recognize that this would be a multi-year process. I suggest contacting some native plant/seed sources that offer consulting and/or training services so you can understand the scope of a project like this. One I know of is Michigan Wildflower Farm (michiganwildflowerfarm.com). Wildtype (wildtypeplants.com) is another and there are probably more. Also get the catalogs from Prairie Moon Nursery (prairie moon.com) and Prairie Nursery (prairienursery.com) as both sell a variety of native plant seed mixes. They also have good instructions on proper site preparation and seeding steps. The Oakland Conservation District Backyard Habitat Certification program course might be good for someone to check out. The Oakland Co. Conservation District may be able to provide guidance (http://www.oaklandconservationdistrict.org/). The National Conservation Resource Service might provide some guidance too (NRCS Conservation Service).
