3 acre weed field- can we grow grass #878811
Asked July 25, 2024, 8:20 PM EDT
We have a 3 acre field in front of our home, mostly field with field weeds and now tansy. I would like to reduce the field weeds into more grass.
Would like to grow seed in the field non-til, since I do not have any ag equipment except field mower and std spreader.
How can I get grass seed to grow and start replacing some of the weeds? ie can I just spread grass seed (without tilling/implanting)? If so what season is best and condition field need to be in?
Bottom line- do not want to spend a lot of money except on the seed

Thanks for your question.
What is your goal with three acre field?
Are you interested in growing grass seed for sale or for grazing or hay?
The first step will be to control the weeds and then seed the field.
The Tualatin Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) rents a no-till seed drill which might be a good option for you, allowing you to seed the field without tilling.
The Tualatin SWCD may also be able to help with advise on weed control and renting of the no-till seed drill.
