Mushrooms on tree #878770

Asked July 25, 2024, 3:49 PM EDT

My otherwise healthy sugar (?) maple tree suddenly has mushrooms growing on it. Is this a problem and if so, what do I do. Does the tree need to be removed?

Hello,

Based on the images you provided, I used my Plant-ID app (Picture This), and I identified the tree as a silver maple and the fungi as Ganodermataceae fungi (what you say is a mushroom)

The presence of Ganodermataceae fungi on your silver maple tree can cause concern. This family of fungi includes species known to cause wood decay, particularly in stressed or weakened trees. While the information I found does not mention Ganodermataceae, it provides insight into fungal infections in maples.

Here’s what you should know and some steps you can take:

Assessment: It’s important to assess the extent of the infection. If the fungi are only present on the surface and the tree is otherwise healthy, it might not be an immediate problem. However, if the fungi penetrated the wood, it could compromise the tree's structural integrity.

Consult an Arborist: I recommend consulting with a certified arborist who can inspect the tree and provide a professional assessment of its condition. You can consult a local certified arborist for a more detailed onsite assessment and personalized advice. To find a certified arborist in your Zip Code, go to this link:

Management: If the infection is not severe, pruning the affected areas and improving the tree’s growing conditions may help. Ensure good air circulation and avoid wounding the tree, as wounds can provide entry points for fungi.

Removal: In cases where the tree is significantly compromised or poses a safety hazard, removal might be necessary. An arborist can help determine this.

Early intervention can help manage the problem and potentially save the tree. Act promptly and seek professional advice.

I hope this helps!
