Eradicating large colony of Tree of Heaven #878766

Asked July 25, 2024, 3:27 PM EDT

I live on a half-acre in the Ann Arbor area, where tree of heaven is taking over our garden beds, lawn, and sprouting up through the deck and against the foundation. We have tried consistently hand-weeding these out with as much root as possible, but they are increasing in number. We walked through the yard with a tree service who identified three very tall parent trees in our neighbors' yards. The company is not familiar with tree of heaven eradication and suggested simply removing the trees, but I'm worried that without killing them first, the obviously extensive root system will send up even more new shoots in response. I have two main questions: - is there an effective way to control tree of heaven in our own yard without bothering our neighbors trees, though they are clearly connected? - if not, what is the proper way to remove tree of heaven? Do you know of a service in the Ann Arbor area with knowledge and experience in tree of heaven removal specifically? Thank you for the help!

Unfortunately, if you don't remove the older trees with the heavy fruit set, you will probably always have seedlings in your yard.

Here is a relatively recent great article from Rutgers Extension program discussing herbicides treatments as part of the removal strategy, so that root suckers do not grow into new trees where you are trying to remove old trees.

Here is a link to look for qualified arborists in your area. I would look for an ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) certified arborist.
