How can I get rid of the Spotted Lanternflys. I have a lot of them, and they are destroying my plants/flowers.

Expert Response

Spotted Lanternfly does not need to be treated with any type of insecticide, nor would the use of one keep the insects out of a yard for very long, since adults can fly into an area. Additionally, any insecticide used has the risk of harming other insects, like pollinators, fireflies, and others, because they are not selective for just killing lanternfly. The page linked about includes links to more resources, including Penn State's instructions for building a "circle trap" around trees if you wanted to try chemical-free means of control.

Since they suck up plant sap (they cannot chew), their feeding has not been found to cause any visible plant damage in home landscapes, so if you are seeing plant injury and decline, feel free to share photos so we can try to determine the cause. Often, root moisture (too much or too little), spider mite damage, and leaf spot infections are common culprits for summer plant issues.
