What is in my tree? #878672

Asked July 24, 2024, 11:21 PM EDT

I have a mature tulip tree and I noticed these white, almost mold looking growths all over the branches & trunk. The tree bloomed a lot this spring but has not had the 2nd bloom yet. The tree has had branches die the last few years. How can I treat and prevent it from coming back?

The tree in your photo is not the tulip tree I am familiar with. This link shows a tulip tree and the leaves are shaped differently than what is in your photos.

I am not certain what type of tree you have, however, it looks like it has scale. Scales are soft or armored insects that show up on tree branches. When there is high infestation you will likely notice other insects because they are attracted to honeydew that the scales produce. Here is a link that gives details about scale.

If you want to be certain of the type of tree and what is occurring I would recommend contacting a local tree care company and ask for a consultation from an arborist. They will be able to evaluate the tree and suggest next steps if needed.
