Blue Spruce Disease Question #878657

Asked July 24, 2024, 8:06 PM EDT

I have 2 15 year old blue spruces and both have the new growth tips dying, getting thick and curling down. I cut them off. Do you know what is causing this and how to treat it? Thanks much!

Thank you for contacting Ask Extension.  It looks like this is a duplicate question so I will resend the original answer.

Hello Leslie,

Thank you for contacting Ask Extension with your question about the thick dying ends of your spruce branches. It looks like you have the Cooley Spruce Gall adelgid aphid which can be common in our area, This insect can cause little or no harm to the tree. I am sending a fact sheet which describes this insect and how to control the problem.
