Blue Spruce New Growth Dying #878654

Asked July 24, 2024, 7:56 PM EDT

I have 2 15 year old spruce trees. The end of many branches is thick, curled down and dying. I trimmed off all I could reach. What is causing this and how can I save the trees!

Hello Leslie,

Thank you for contacting Ask Extension with your question about the thick dying ends of your spruce branches.  It looks like you have the Cooley Spruce Gall adelgid aphid which can be common in our area,  This insect can cause little or no harm to the tree. I am sending a fact sheet which describes this insect and how to control the problem.
