It sounds like you might have had powdery mildew which can infect leaves and stems of lilacs. Here is some information from the Pacific Northwest Plant Disease Management Handbook - https://pnwhandbooks.org/plantdisease/host-disease/lilac-syringa-spp-powdery-mildew
Powdery mildew spores can overwinter in plant debris and soil so remove any existing plant debris and replace surface soil to help prevent reinfection of any new plants. Space plants so they have good air circulation and don't plant lilacs in shady areas.
