Gardening - Pruning a Conifer #878609

Asked July 24, 2024, 3:03 PM EDT

We are growing a Sequoia that we started as a seedling. We transferred it outside this spring but prior to relocating it, we treated it for spider mites. It had a fairly severe infestation. For a while it looked like it wasn't going to survive but now was new branches are growing. The top, however, appears to be dead. The question is, can we prune off the top without compromising the growth direction? Thanks for any insight including the pruning of the branches that appear to be dead. Is there a better time of year to prune this specimen? Thanks again!

Hi,  Yes, unfortunately if you lose the central leader it will change the overall growth habit of the tree at least a little.  You can select the most upright growing point and make a proper pruning cut right above that bud to direct the "new" leader.  Generally speaking this type of plant does not require any pruning unless you have some damaged or cross branching.
