Red Oak Wilt #878603

Asked July 24, 2024, 2:40 PM EDT

I have a very large, healthy, double red oak. In the past we have (2 years ago and then 4 years ago) treated it to prevent oak wilt. We are questioning whether we should continue treating every 2 years or not since many of the treated white oaks do not look good. We are wondering if it is inevitable that the oaks in Apple Valley will not live and eventually the treatment is a money drain. Tree trimmers say that if left untreated we will be taking down our oak in 5 years from oak wilt. What is the probability of our red oak getting oak wilt if we treat or we don't treat? Four years ago I had talked to Jessica, who worked for the city of Apple Valley. She mentioned that weird things were happening to the oaks in Apple Valley and they were asking PHD students to study what was going on. Do you have any information as to what any of the studies with the U of Mn or Iowa determined? Any insight you can give would be appreciated.

We (master gardeners) don't know whether the studies you mention were conducted or what the outcome might have been.

It's possible that Jessica was referring to studies related to bur oak blight conducted in Minnesota and Iowa. If so, blighted oaks might look unhealthy despite oak wilt treatments.
