Grapes rotting already #878577

Asked July 24, 2024, 1:04 PM EDT

I have two vines of local varieties of grapes, likely concords, as an arbor. I've used mainly copper spray this year but have also tried mancozeb in the past, could not find it this year. Already the grapes are turning brown and some black ones have already shriveled up. What to do???

Expert Response

Hi Paul! How frustrating! Is it possible to send pictures of the leaves and the fruit? Are the stems shriveling also? I want to be sure the problem is what I think (emphasis on think) it is...black rot. The best thing to do as of now is to remove the infected fruit & leaves. Do not compost them.

If it is black rot, you would remove all infected fruit from the area, leaving nothing on the ground, to overwinter. As for spraying a fungicide, another option is Captan - assuming it is black rot.

Whenever you use a chemical, please remember that the LABEL IS THE LAW (I'm not yelling at you - I just want you to understand it is important to read the labels and use the chemical as instructed).

Karen,

Thank you for your response. I'm unable to upload pics but appreciate your suggestion. The leave appear normal as do the stems.

Next spring, watch for any lesions on the canes or leaves. Begin spraying before bloom time and continue for 4 weeks after bloom. Please remove all black &/or shriveled fruit from the garden this year so that there are minimal spores to be released next spring during the rains.

Good luck! Enjoy your garden!
