Hi Bryan,
I have attached a handout on pruning trees from us here at OSU and one that has cost estimates on different orchard systems from Washington State (Where trellised orchards are more common). Trellised orchards are becoming more popular, especially in Eastern Washington and upstate New York because of the higher number of trees per acre and simplification of pruning and ability to mechanize leads to greater yields and greater control over fruit quality.
However, trellised orchards are an expensive investment and take careful consideration, especially here in the valley. There are some cider apple producers that are making a good return on investment, however.
"Pedestrian orchards" or trees pruned to stay short on semi dwarf rootstock may be a more affordable alternative.
