Shrub Delimma #878429

Asked July 23, 2024, 1:24 PM EDT

I have two concerns about my shrubs --I am finding that on my hedges there is tons of these tiny white bugs and also a couple of my hedges are dying with many dead limbs where thick green leaves use to be -- Are these bugs killing my shrubs -what can I do to kill these bugs and what are they ?

Expert Response

Good afternoon and thank you for reaching out. We will need pictures of the bushes as well as some close-up pictures of the bugs if possible. Would that be possible for you to attach some photos to this question?

Hello Ron –

Thank you for your inquiry.
However, there are several, many even, shrubs/hedges which have think green leaves, also quite a number of white bugs. Without a few photos and a description of the shrubs, it is difficult to provide you with advice about what to do.
- What kind of shrubs do you have?
- Where on your property are the shrubs?
- How frequently are the shrubs watered?
- You say that the white bugs are tiny. How tiny? Are they crawling? Do they fly around?
I would be glad to try to help your situation with more information. Hope to hear from you soon.

Hello Nancy -- I have sent in all that info to Terri along with pictures of my shrubs  --but if you need me to send to you just let me know

Hey, there — unfortunately your pictures did not come through. I’m sorry our system is being stubborn. You can either email them to me at <personal data hidden> or you can text them to me on my personal cell phone at<personal data hidden>.
Good Morning,
It's hard to tell by the picture, but I think it may be Taxus mealybugs. They are sap feeders, and the honeydew they produce allows sooty mold to grow..

We do not recommend home remedies, like dish soap, since plants can be burned by it. Instead, use a horticultural oil( active ingredient mineral-based paraffin or olefin), or an insecticidal soap( active ingredient is potassium salts of fatty acids). There are chemical options as well.

Pruning more than 1/3 of the leafy material further stresses the plant. The best chance of recovery is to keep it well watered up to when the ground freezes in October, but so not keep the soil overly soggy.
Pruning back into the woody area of yews may or may not stimulate dormant buds, so there is a risk it will not sprout new growth.

Do closely monitor your healthy yews, as the Taxus mealybug is found in the inner areas of bark and branches.
