sun light #878394

Asked July 23, 2024, 11:02 AM EDT

How important is it to have maximum sun on a vegetable garden. My garden does not get the morning sun, it is on the west side of the house. I might get about 7 hours of sun the whole day. Also I bought my soil from Kurtz brothers a couple of years ago. This is their garden blend. Since then, I have found cigarette butts, glass and other trash in my soil. Is this bad for the soil? I have been mixing compost in the soil at the end of the growing season. My plants grow, but I don't get a good yield from them. Any recommendations are appreciated.

Expert Response

Hello,
Seven hours of sun should be plenty for a vegetable garden.

I would definitely recommend talking to Kurtz Brothers if you think the debris in your garden was in the packaged garden soil you got from them. It would be best to remove as much of the debris as you can, especially the cigarette butts.

Adding compost to your soil is a good idea. Adding it in the spring at planting time may provide the most benefit for your vegetables since nutrients can leach out over the winter months.

Getting a soil test will help you determine what nutrients may be lacking and the best way to amend the soil to improve your yields. This article from Ohio State extension has information on getting your soil tested.
