Maryland-approved, algae-eating fish for farm pond #878374
Asked July 23, 2024, 8:52 AM EDT
We have a ~1/4 acre farm pond right outside Chestertown, MD with an egress that connects to the creek that runs through our property. We're currently experiencing an algae bloom that we're not able to control with chemical herbicides, and we'd like to try stocking the pond with fish, as a biological plant control method.
We saw on this helpful Pond Management resource that stocking grass carp is illegal in Maryland. Can you help us with a recommendation for the right kind of fish to stock the pond with, where to get them, and any needed permits?
Thanks so much,
Micah

Hi Micah,
I am sending you the contact information for the Fisheries Department of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Here is a website and a phone number. It would be best to consult them since they can keep you abreast of the appropriate regulations and suggestions for your area. Happy stocking!

Micah, you can also get information and assistance here:
https://extension.umd.edu/programs/environment-natural-resources/program-areas/wells-septic-systems-and-water-quality/pond-management/
Managing water quality often takes more than stocking fish but also nutrient management, etc.. Some plantings can help shade and filter and barley straw is used to keep things under control as well.
SeaGrant Extension may be able to share information as well:
