Solar panels #878365

Given the amount of cloud cover in West Michigan, are solar panels still a wise option for a private residence? Do you have any information on the Ambia Co. and their solar panel service?

Expert Response

Hi David,

The answer to your first question is yes. There is still enough sunlight to make solar power generation viable. In regard to your second question, I called Ambia because their website did not provide the answers to the questions I was looking for. I was told that Ambia takes responsibility for the solar project until the project is complete, and the homeowner signs off on it. However, after that the homeowner is on their own. I was told that the homeowner should work through their lender and insurance company to address maintenance issues. They do not finance solar projects. That is done through a local lender. I suggest you get a second opinion and contact solar developers who are members of the Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association. Click on "About" in the ribbon and then click on "Business Directory". A list of businesses will appear on your screen. There are utility scale, community scale, and homeowner scale solar businesses listed. It will be obvious who they serve when you go to their website. I recommend you start there because by virtue of the fact that these businesses are members of an organization, they at least meet a minimum standard. This is a tight knit group of businesses, and they all know each other. Businesses that are not reputable don't stay with the association very long. Hope this helps. Take care,

Thank you for your quick response. Because I have recently moved to this home I have decided to let a few months of energy use go by and see if my consumption is enough to justify the investment of solar panels. I also want to see how the sun hits the roof through the seasons. I will take your advice on dealing with a local company. Thanks again, David Dombrowski.
