Hi, we want to plant some Blue Spruce this year, we're at about 8200'. What's the best time, and how much sun do they need? Also, we're in moderate drought right now and that will get worse. How much water will they need? Lastly, we were thinking maybe 3 or 4' tall. What do you suggest? And do you know where we can get them?

Hello,
The best time too plant Blue Spruce and all evergreens is the spring. Blue Spruce are great trees for our area. You’ll want to take into consideration the placement of the trees as depending on the variety, they can get quite tall. Ensure that the trees are planted in an area that will accommodate that height into the future. Spruce trees require a lot of water, so you’ll want to ensure that the plantings are sufficiently watered as they become established. This includes watering in the winter. They also need a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight each day. Here are some tips for planting trees by the Colorado State Forest Service as well as information on winter watering. Most of your local nurseries will offer several varieties of Blue Spruce.
