Maple tree #878324

Asked July 22, 2024, 5:30 PM EDT

The maple tree in our front yard has a number of outer branches that have turned red. It seems a bit early for fall colors. Is our tree sick? See attached photos

Expert Response

Hello Robert,

Thanks for reaching out! Maple trees changing color early can often be a sign of environmental stress, such as depleted nutrients in the soil or over/under-watering. Have you done a soil test? It might be a good idea to send in a soil test sample to see if there is anything you need to add to the soil to support the tree. Here is a link to the UMN Soil Testing Laboratory: https://soiltest.cfans.umn.edu/

Alternatively, you could hire a certified arborist to come assess the tree for any diseases or environmental issues (https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/how-hire-tree-care-professional). It might be a good idea to start with the soil test, since that will be more affordable, and consider the arborist after you receive your results. You are also welcome to send a photo of your results to us and we can provide some recommendations!

Otherwise, pay careful attention to the watering to further support the health of your tree (helpful guidance available here: https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/watering-established-trees-and-shrubs)

I hope this helps!
