Asked July 22, 2024, 3:58 PM EDT

I need to know how to get this out of my yard for good. I’m digging some up today with a pitchfork. Ready to take a flame thrower to it!! Thanks

Expert Response

Bindweed is a challenge to control because of its large/deep root system. Pulling and digging won't usually provide satisfactory results because any pieces of root left behind can resprout, but if done repeatedly over three to five years can exhaust the plant resources. Repetitive digging and pulling every two to three weeks throughout the growing season will ultimately deplete the root system and provide some control. Spot treating with an herbicide labeled for control of bindweed may be your best option. Care must be taken though to keep the herbicide from getting onto any desirable plants. Applying an herbicide while it is flowering seems to be the best time, but it is a bit hot right now and some herbicides are volatile in high temperatures so proper selection of an herbicide is crucial. Systemic herbicides will provide better control, but bindweed root systems can be so large that a single application is insufficient to kill the entire root system. Allow the plant to grow and produce flowers between applications. Check with your local garden center employees for possible products.
