tomatoes lack of fruit #878288

Asked July 22, 2024, 2:49 PM EDT

We have four tomato plants, and only one of them is producing fruit, and even that one it's not a lot. Any ideas as to what is going on?

Expert Response

High heat is usually responsible, as it can prevent flower formation, cause already-formed flowers to abort, or kill pollen, which will prevent pollination. As we move out of the heat wave and reach more seasonal temperatures, flowering and fruiting should resume normally if the plant is otherwise healthy and growing well. If grown in an area with extra heat, like in a container on a deck or near a solid fence that blocks airflow, shading plants with some shade cloth for part of the day can help to alleviate some heat stress. Some varieties can be more sensitive to this kind of stress than others. Other causes of poor fruiting include the application of too much nitrogen-heavy fertilizer, though this factor is less common than high heat.
